History

The site on which the airport is currently located was first occupied by the Gala Amusement Park. In 1929, the park was transformed into a 105-acre flying field, originally called the Glenn H. Curtiss Airport and later North Beach Airport. This airport was then taken over by New York city and enlarged by the purchase of adjoining land and by filling in 357 acres of waterfront along the east side. Ground was broken for a new airport on September 9, 1937 and on October 15, 1937 it was dedicated as New York City Municipal Airport.

The name was changed to New York Municipal Airport-LaGuardia Field on November 2, 1939. The airport was opened to commercial traffic on December 2 of that year. The airport was leased to the Port Authority in 1947.
