By Public Transportation:

• Take an NJ Transit train from New York Penn Station to the Newark Airport stop, and take the AirTrain (http://www.panynj.gov/airtrainnewark/offairport_newark.html) from there to the airport. Travel time is about 30 minutes from New York Penn Station.
• From the World Trade Center Station, take the PATH to Newark, then take NJ Transit Bus 62 to Newark Airport. Travel time is about 52 minutes
• From the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 41^st St. and 8^th Ave. take NJ Transit Bus 107 to Newark Airport North Terminal. Then take Bus 37 to Newark Airport. Travel time is about 45 minutes.

History

Built by the City of Newark and opened on October 1, 1928, Newark Airport is the metropolitan region's first major airport. EWR was originally built on 68 acres of marshland, though it eventually grew to encompass a total of 2,207 acres. It quickly became the world's busiest commercial airport.

Newark Airport was operated by the Army Air Corps. Once the Port Authority became the Airport's operator, the agency added an air cargo center, a control tower, a terminal building and an instrument runway. During the 1970s the Port Authority constructed the Central Terminal Area, the Port Authority Administration Building, the Central Heating and Refrigeration Plant, roadways and taxiways. A two-building maintenance complex opened in 1989.

In 1996, both the Monorail, now called AirTrain Newark, and the International Arrivals Facility in Terminal B were opened. In 2003, a 325-foot control tower was commissioned - the fourth in the airport's history.
