There is a big difference between the size of the New York region's
airports and the size of other airports around the country. Denver's
airport, in its current form, could handle the traffic volume of all three of
the New York
region's major airports combined.
The substantial size of Denver's single airport indicates that its region could potentially handle far more air traffic than our land-constrained system of airports. Denver's airport has a considerable amount of land banked to allow for terminal expansion and the construction of additional runways to meet future demand, providing region with a long-term competitive advantage over other metropolitan areas.
To provide quick and efficient access to Denver's airport, which is located 25 miles from downtown, the city set aside space along the major access corridor to accommodate a future extension of Denver's FasTracks system. This past Spring commuter rail was selected as the preferred alternative for the FasTracks Eastern Corridor extension to the airport and construction is scheduled to commence sometime in 2011.
